Safe sleep starts with a safe crib – 5 tips.
At Wieg Huren we do not only want to rent beautiful cradles, but above all contribute to a safe sleeping environment for your baby. Because as a parent you want nothing more than for your child to sleep well and safely. That is why we share the most important tips in this blog, based on the Dutch guidelines for safe sleeping – with an extra tip about using a co-sleeper safely.
1. Always sleep on your back
It remains the most important and simple rule: always put your baby to sleep on his back. Not on his side or stomach. Back sleeping significantly reduces the risk of cot death and ensures that your child can breathe freely.
2. Own bed, close to parents
Your baby sleeps safest in his or her own crib or cot – but in your room. Sleeping together in one bed may sound cozy, but it is not without risks. A crib or co-sleeper next to your bed is a safe and practical alternative, especially in the first six months. Because you sleep close to your baby, you can respond quickly and easily to your baby’s needs.
3. Using a co-sleeper? Assemble it properly
A co-sleeper is ideal for easy access to your baby at night. But be careful: safety starts with proper assembly. Make sure the co-sleeper is securely attached to your bed and that there is no space between your bed mattress and that of the co-sleeper is horizontal. Any buttons or stitch holes in fabric co-sleepers must be secured to ensure stability. Always follow the manual – or ask us for help with assembly, we are happy to help you.
4. Keep the bed empty and tidy
Choose a firm mattress that fits well in the crib, and use a tightly tucked sheet or a well-fitting baby sleeping bag. Leave cuddly toys, pillows and thick blankets behind – the more empty the bed, the safer it is. At Wieg Huren we ensure that all cribs meet the latest safety requirements and are delivered with a suitable mattress. You can buy or rent a new mattress as an additional option, but this is not necessary.
5. Not too hot, and always smoke-free
A good room temperature is between 16 and 18 degrees. Dress your baby in layers rather than under a thick blanket. And smoking? That does not belong anywhere near a baby. A smoke-free environment – both indoors and outdoors – is one of the most important ways to prevent cot death.
Extra: Pets, especially cats, find a crib a wonderful place to sleep. Keep your pets away from your baby’s sleeping area.
